{"id":6835,"date":"2012-11-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-11-22T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.genisi.com\/the-100-milion-years-oyster\/"},"modified":"2012-11-23T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-11-22T23:00:00","slug":"the-100-milion-years-oyster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.genisi.com\/en\/the-100-milion-years-oyster\/","title":{"rendered":"The 100 milion years oyster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A normal day of fishing may become one of the most important <strong>discoveries<\/strong> in <strong>the pearl history<\/strong>: last june during a simple trawling beat a fisherman found a very unusual thing among the harvest from his net, a <strong>giant fossilized oyster<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Ostrica_100milionianni_1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genisi.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/05\/article-0-1374C7EC000005DC-283_634x762.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"533\"><\/p>\n<p>After being duly cleaned from the think layers of mud, this prehistoric mussel has been measured and date: <strong>17.78cm wide<\/strong> and <strong>7.62cm think<\/strong>, this fossilized mollusc has more than <strong>100 milion years<\/strong> and is <strong>10 times bigger than a regular oyster<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The fossil has been given to the <strong>Blue Reef Aquarium<\/strong> of Portsmouth, Hampshire, where the experts will study the ancient mussel through its <strong>growth rings<\/strong>, exactly like a tree, and subject it to further analysis and an <strong>MRI scan<\/strong> to explore the inside parts without being invasive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Ostrica_100milionianni_2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genisi.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/05\/article-0-1374C967000005DC-60_634x483.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"338\"><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>aquarist Jenna MacFarlane<\/strong> of Blue Reef Aquarium explained that, on the basis of its <strong>200 growth rings<\/strong> found on the rocky shell surface, this specimen may be <strong>the most longlived oyster<\/strong> ever found; despite the slim possibilities to still find something inside it, this oyster may conceal <strong>the biggest pearl in the world<\/strong>, as big as a golf ball judging by the dimentions of the fossil.<\/p>\n<p>Only an MRI scan can unveil this mystery, so we only have to wait future results.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A normal day of fishing may become one of the most important discoveries in the pearl history: last june during a simple trawling beat a fisherman found a very unusual thing among the harvest from his net, a giant fossilized oyster.
