{"id":6858,"date":"2013-01-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-22T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.genisi.com\/bursidae-pearls\/"},"modified":"2013-01-23T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2013-01-22T23:00:00","slug":"bursidae-pearls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.genisi.com\/en\/bursidae-pearls\/","title":{"rendered":"Bursidae pearls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even unsuspected mussels like the &#8220;<strong>sea snails<\/strong>&#8221; can become miraculous producers of rare and beautiful pearls: the <strong>Bursidae ones<\/strong>, even if they have earned the surname &#8220;<strong>toad shells<\/strong>&#8221; thanks to the bumps on their surfaces, can&#8217;t be judged only by their aspect because they could <strong>hide a big treasure<\/strong> inside themeselves.<\/p>\n<p>Their develope is pretty singular and consists in the very true <strong>creation of its shell<\/strong> like the construction a house; all these seashells have <strong>peculiar syphons<\/strong> protruding form the spiral base of the case, which are no more then <strong>temporary accomodations<\/strong> that the mussel had inside the shell itself while it was on construction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.genisi.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/05\/p30-Bursidae-Giant-Frogshell.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2577\" title=\"p30-Bursidae-Giant-Frogshell\" src=\"https:\/\/www.genisi.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/05\/p30-Bursidae-Giant-Frogshell.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"403\" height=\"560\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The same syphons show the <strong>developement periods<\/strong> of the invertebrate and, depending on their position, which side of the shell is under construction too; these <strong>growth periods<\/strong> are quiet times for the mussel, which prefers to <strong>hide itself in safe places<\/strong> as long as the shell isn&#8217;t completely formed and thickened.<\/p>\n<p>Even if these specimens appear as <strong>fragile creature<\/strong> from their way formation, they know exactly <strong>how to protect themeself<\/strong> and, like newts, the toad shells possess particular <strong>acid secretions<\/strong> to paralize their prey; they finally can be found <strong>both in shallow and deep waters<\/strong>, usually covered with algae and other organisms.<\/p>\n<p>The pearls produced by this type of mussel have <strong>different colors<\/strong> which can go from <strong>cream, light pink to strong orange<\/strong> thanks to the internal conformation of the shell itself; since this invertebrate is not capable to produce mother-of-pearl, these rare and precious pearls are <strong>made of chalky material<\/strong>, which does not affect their beauty and value at all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even unsuspected mussels like the &#8220;sea snails&#8221; can become miraculous producers of rare and beautiful pearls: the Bursidae ones, even if they have earned the surname &#8220;toad shells&#8221; thanks to the bumps on their surfaces, can&#8217;t be judged only by their aspect because they could hide a big treasure inside themeselves.
