These regular and perfect pearls, available in commerce, are the result of a careful selection, ruled by rigid parameters that have the primary purpose of launching only the best pearls in the luxury market.
To assure the sublime quality, the Japan Pearl Exporters’ Association established a new selection method applicable on all the peals, and above all on the typical Japanese Akoya ones, based on 5 specific characteristics:
– nacre thickness, or the layer of mother of pearl that covers the nuclei, that has to be enough thick to not snow the installed nuclei, or else they are discarded;
– luster and clearness, if dull or blemished by calcite or organic material, they can compromise the beauty of the pearl;
– superficial blemishes, like scratches, bumps or pits that can irretrivably damage the surface of the pearl and make it be discarded;
– nacre damage, like cracks of flaking that make the pearls immediately be discarded;
– process damages, like eccessive dyeing or bleaching that automatically make these pearls be rejected.
Obviously, every pearl is a unique exemplar, and little faults like small pits or knobs are what make the pearl a particular and fascinating material, hence not fixing the prior rejection of a pearl since they are natural characterisics.
Thanks to their decennal experience, pearl masters that carry out these selections are careful to every detail during the sorting that takes place at the Inspection Office in Kobe, where pearls are prepared and made available on demand.
